Your story in eight characters

What are the Four Pillars, and how does a moment of birth become eight characters?

Four pillars of a birth

Saju is an East Asian tradition that represents a birth year, month, day, and hour as four pillars. Each contains a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch: eight characters in total. It offers a cultural framework for reflecting on qualities and patterns through traditional symbols.

Meeting your day master

The upper character of the day pillar, called the day master, represents the self in this tradition. Ten stems combine the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water with yin and yang. Use them as prompts to explore qualities rather than fixed definitions of personality.

Our calculation conventions

We use Gregorian dates and Korean civil clock time, with year and month pillars set by solar terms and days changing at midnight. Unknown birth times exclude the hour pillar. We do not correct true solar time, overseas time zones, or historical daylight saving, so specialist calendars may differ.

A reading is a gentle invitation to reflect. Your choices shape your tomorrow.
